Instructions
Cook Lentils and Tomatoes
Add red lentils, chopped tomatoes, turmeric, and water to a medium pot. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to medium heat and cook for 15 minutes until lentils are completely soft and falling apart.
Blend and Season
Use a spoon to mash everything together or blend briefly with an immersion blender for a smoother consistency kids often prefer. Add rasam powder and salt. Stir well to combine all flavors.
Simmer and Develop Flavor
Return the pot to low heat and simmer for 5 more minutes. The rasam should be thin and slightly tangy. Taste and adjust salt if needed. The consistency should be thinner than regular soup.
Finish and Serve
Heat oil in a small pan until very hot and pour it directly into the rasam for a traditional finish that adds incredible aroma. Serve in bowls or cups as a soup or alongside steamed rice for a complete meal.
