Instructions
Combine Grits and Liquid
Add grits, water or milk, and salt to a large microwave-safe bowl, stirring to combine and making sure the bowl is large enough to prevent boiling over.
Microwave the Grits
Microwave on high for 2 minutes, stir well, then microwave for another 2 minutes until the grits are thick and most of the liquid is absorbed.
Stir in Butter
Remove from microwave and stir in butter until fully melted and incorporated, then let sit for 30 seconds to thicken slightly.
Add Cheese and Serve
Top with shredded sharp cheddar cheese and microwave for 20 seconds to melt, then stir everything together and serve immediately.
