Instructions

1

Mix the Dry Ingredients

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Whisk flour, baking powder, half teaspoon garlic powder, and half teaspoon salt together in a large bowl. Add the shredded cheddar cheese and toss to coat the cheese pieces in the flour mixture so they do not clump together.

2

Form the Dough

Pour buttermilk and half of the melted butter into the dry ingredients. Stir with a wooden spoon just until a shaggy dough forms. Do not overmix or the biscuits will become tough and dense instead of tender and flaky.

3

Bake the Biscuits

Drop heaping spoonfuls of dough onto a parchment lined baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake at 450 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits are cooked through with no doughy center.

4

Apply the Garlic Herb Butter

While biscuits bake, mix remaining melted butter with remaining garlic powder and dried parsley. As soon as biscuits come out of the oven, immediately brush the garlic herb butter generously over every surface of every biscuit. Serve warm.

Substitutions

whole milkbuttermilk for a more tangy and classic biscuit flavor
sharp cheddar cheesewhite cheddar or Colby Jack cheese for a milder flavor

Common mistakes

Overmixing the biscuit dough which develops too much gluten and produces dense heavy biscuits instead of light and fluffy ones
Waiting too long to brush on the garlic butter which prevents it from soaking in and results in biscuits that lack that signature buttery flavor
